Each year Poatina invites everyone to it's annual Open Day and birthday celebrations. The day is an open invitation for people to come and see all aspects of Poatina, including tourism, youth work, the Golden Chain Poatina Chalet, skills training areas, Trinity College, Hot Glass Studio and lots more.

Children enjoying rides on Thomas the Tank Engine Thousands of Tasmanians have treasured memories of this town that played a significant role in shaping their identities. For the past 16 years, Poatina has created its own history through its approach to the well being of youth, training and tourism.

Poatina's annual Open Day is always relaxing and fun for the whole family. There is plenty of food and free festival activities for the children, including a jumping castle, face painting and Thomas rides. Visitors are invited to warm up by a blazing open fire at the Mountain View Restaurant, or stroll around the central business district to enjoy the art gallery, pottery studio or other enterprises.

Barrow of fun!

Wednesday, 26 January 2011

Winning Team of 2009 Poatina's Australia Day Family Festival captures the true Australian spirit with FREE festival activities and fun for the whole family. From face painting to children's crafts, jumping castle, stilts, Thomas train rides, live music, street theatre, damper & tea and "snags on the barbie" - there will be something for everyone.

In 2011, Poatina is proudly working with Northern Midlands Council to host their Australia Day Awards as part of the Festival's official opening.

Another highlight will be the grueling Southern Cross Great Wheelbarrow Race where competitors battle it out in a 4 kilometre race. Teams race through bushland, cross over creeks and sometimes even dodge wildlife, while pushing a daring passenger in a wheelbarrow! Fantastic prizes include four weekend getaways at Poatina's Golden Chain Motel.

Street Parades, free merry-go-round, Thomas rides, jumping castle and more! Competing teams in the Great Wheelbarrow Race are made up of four members with at least one male and one female (ie. three men pushing the wheelbarrow and one woman sitting in it). The wheelbarrow passenger needs to weigh at least 45 kilos and for their own safety, they must supply and wear a bike helmet. It is also recommended that teams bring their own "builders quality" wheelbarrow. Entry into the race is free.

Statues, clowns, live entertainment and more... Ladies Gumboot Toss, Karaoke contests and other competitions are held throughout the day, and over 30 district businesses get behind the event sponsoring fantastic prizes.
